Scientists have said a woman who died of bird flu contracted the disease from her daughter. "This is a very important step towards the conclusion that we all wanted to avoid"
Professor John Oxford, a leading UK expert, said the virus had broken down the "final door" which prevented it being spread between people - published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
World health officials have issued their strongest warning yet about the global threat posed by bird flu. About 140 million birds died or were slaughtered in an effort to contain the outbreak. The virus has not been contained in Asia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently urged all countries to develop or update their influenza "pandemic preparedness plans" after experts estimated anywhere between two and 50 million people could die if a pandemic hits and the world is not prepared.
Experts say it is no longer a case of if but when a pandemic of bird flu hits the human population.

Even in the best-case scenario, two million to seven million people would die and tens of millions would require medical attention, WHO says.
The world is now in the gravest possible danger of a human flu pandemic triggered by the virus.
