04.10.2005 - World Health Organization are again sounding the alarm on the influenza A (H5N1) virus, Z strain, commonly known as "Bird Flu". The virus, which first appeared in Hong Kong in 1997, could mutate genetically, making it easier for humans to catch and transmit the disease among themselves.
The real danger is the increasing number of human cases and the highly infectious nature of the virus. The mortality rate for infection is 75 per cent. Only Ebola and Rabies come close at about 50 %. The WHO has made plans to have three million treatments of a medication called Tamiflu stockpiled in case of a pandemic in humans.
Tamiflu (Also known as Oseltamivir phosphate) is an antiviral drug primarily invented for the purpose of treating influenza. Tamiflu can also prevent the onset of flu even if you have been exposed to people who have it. Tamiflu is the only drug that is effective in stopping the Avian/Bird Flu from spreading once exposed.
